Who we are
EGO (이고) is UC Berkeley’s Korean Traditional Percussion Group. Our mission is to share the joy and beauty of P’ungmul (풍물) as we spread awareness of the Korean culture throughout the Bay Area and beyond. EGO was initially founded by a group of friends in 2000. More than a decade old, EGO has flourished into a prominent group that lives to share the excitement of Korean drumming as well as the deep traditional Korean culture and history that lies behind each beat and rhythm.
WHat we do
We perform for various organizations, private parties, and school events. We play pieces in different genres of Traditional Korean Percussion, ranging from sitting concert hall arrangements to outdoor percussion accompanied by dance. Take a look at the Pieces page for details! If you are interested in hosting us for a performance, please go to the Performance Request page and fill out a form.
Wednesdays 7:30pm - 10pm
We teach a two-unit DeCal class at UC Berkeley every Fall and Spring semester. The students learn how to play one of two instruments, Buk or Janggu, and learn about the history of Traditional Korean Percussion. At the end of the semester, students participate in a final performance. You do not have be to Korean nor do you have to speak Korean. Everyone is welcome! However, due to its popularity, we do have an application procedure. Stay updated at https://decal.berkeley.edu/.
Saturdays 10am - 12pm
EGO members practice every Saturday during the school year to prepare for performances and to continue to develop their skills. Everyone is welcome. During these hours, we also offer help to decalers interested in Korean drumming.
From socials and retreats to volunteering, EGO plans and participates in all kinds of events to build a sense of belonging among its members and stay involved with the community at large.
